One of the most critical factors for a successful healthcare IT project is an effective executive steering committee. This committee promotes communication within the organization, encourages commitment to the project, and is able to make important decisions at the enterprise level, removing obstacles before they impact the project timeline. An ineffective or poorly constituted executive steering committee can actually be a barrier to the project by failing to provide the necessary oversight and authority to move the project forward in a timely fashion.

Business offices are always busy putting out fires and it is an inefficient use of their time. Moreover, the tools that they are using are also inefficient. There is an assumption that business office staff members know how to use tools such as Microsoft Office – especially Excel. From my experience working with many organizations, this is not true. For example, Excel spreadsheets are often used as worklists, and staff members do not know how to sort and filter spreadsheets.
